Dialogue on 'Aviation, Climate Change and Trade'
The Dialogue is jointly organized by ICTSD, the University of Cambridge and the Centre for European Legal Studies.
Background
Aviation is vital for international trade but is also one of the fastest growing sources of greenhouse gas emissions. It seems challenging though to reach an agreement on how to mitigate emissions from aviation on a global scale. Recently, the topic has generated considerable tension, particularly in the context of the inclusion of aviation in the EU's Emissions Trading System (ETS). Against this backdrop, it is crucial to recall the wider challenge of how to effectively address climate change without unnecessarily restricting prospects for growth and development.
Objective
The aim of the Dialogue is to offer a platform for exchange of views between experts and stakeholders on the regulation of aviation and in particular its effects on trade and the global trading system. The meeting will highlight the environmental, economic, legal and political aspects of the issue, with the ultimate purpose of contributing to identifying constructive and non-confrontational solutions to the challenges discussed.
