International Mountain Day 2012
International Mountain Day is an opportunity to create awareness about the importance of mountains to life, to highlight the opportunities and constraints in mountain development and to build partnerships that will bring positive change to the world’s mountains and highlands.
Mountains are crucial to life. Whether we live at sea level or the highest elevations, we are connected to mountains and affected by them in more ways than we can imagine. Mountains provide most of the world's freshwater, harbour a rich variety of plants and animals, and are home to one in ten people. Yet, each day, environmental degradation, the consequences of climate change, exploitative mining, armed conflict, poverty and hunger threaten the extraordinary web of life that the mountains support.
Events around Geneva
This year the Verbier Green Pioneering Summit (Verbier GPS) will take place on 9 - 11 December 2012 in Verbier, Switzerland.
The Verbier GPS is set up in two parts:
1. The Verbier Investment Forum (VIF) – where institutional investors, investment managers, corporate responsibility leaders and policy makers converge to explore emerging trends in renewable energy, clean technology and resource efficiency investment. Registration fees for the VIF are CHF 300 and include all meals and drinks from Sunday pm to Monday pm. In addition, as a special reward, participants will receive a ski pass to the renown Verbier ski area, valid throughout the 2012-2013 season!
2. The World Mountain Forum (WMF) – with the collaboration of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) where the public and private sectors, regional actors (including municipalities and local businesses), national and international players are connected to find and implement sustainable solutions for reducing or mitigating the impact of climate change. The WMF coincides with the annual International Mountain Day and this will also be celebrated during the Summit
The Verbier GPS brings together public and private sector players in a quest to address the challenges we face in increasing global resource efficiency and mitigating the impact of climate change, with special focus on the mountain regions. It is a quality boutique event and a unique networking opportunity at the heart of the Swiss Alps.
