United Nations Economic Commission for Europe
UNECE’s staff is made up of economists, scientists, urban planners and other experts. Its primary goal is to facilitate economic integration and cooperation among its 56 member States and promote sustainable development and economic prosperity. The UNECE focuses on environment, transport, statistics, sustainable energy, trade, forests and timber, housing and land management, population issues, economic cooperation and integration.
The UNECE organizes regular intergovernmental meetings of the Committee on Environmental Policy, the Committee on Housing and Land Management and the governing bodies of its environmental Conventions:
- The Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution;
- The Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context;
- The Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes;
- The Convention on the Transboundary Effects of Industrial Accidents;
- The Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters.
UNECE activities involve over 70 international organizations.
