David R. Boyd is the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights and the environment.

David R. Boyd was appointed as the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights and the environment for a three-year term commencing August 1, 2018. In his career, he worked as Executive Director of the Sierra Legal Defense Fund, as Co-Chair of the Greenest City Action Team, aimed at making Vancouver the greenest city in the world by 2020, and as Special Advisor to the Government of Canada and to Prime Minister Paul Martin in the sustainability implications of federal policies.

He has advised many governments on environmental, constitutional, and human rights policy. He is a member of the World Commission on Environmental Law, an expert advisor for the UN’s Harmony with Nature Initiative, and a member of ELAW, the Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide. He is also an Associate Professor of law, policy, and sustainability at the University of British Columbia.

David holds a Ph.D. in Resource Management and Environmental Studies from the University of British Columia, a law degree from the University of Toronto, and a business degree from the University of Alberta. David has also authored nine books and more than 100 reports and articles on environmental law and policy, human rights, and constitutional law.
