Marco Keiner is the Director of the Environment Division at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) since 2011. Prior to joining UNECE, he was as a Spatial Planner in the cantonal administrations of Zurich and St. Gallen. Subsequently, he worked in development aid in Mali and Benin where he drafted his doctoral thesis on sustainability-oriented land use planning in the Sahel zone.
From 2000 to 2007, Marco was a Senior Research Assistant at the Institute for Spatial and Landscape Development at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH Zurich) and a Senior Lecturer for Geography at the University of Innsbruck. In 2007, he became the Chief of Urban Environment Section at UN-HABITAT in Nairobi. From 2008-2010, he also served as Director of Environment, Housing and Land Management Division at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) in Geneva.
Marco studied Geography at the University of Erlangen-Nurember and the University of Nice. He also did post-graduate studies in Spatial Planning at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH Zurich). He then obtained a Ph.D. in 1999 from the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt and, in 2005, his habilitation from the University of Innsbruck.
