Monika Gail MacDevette

Monika Gail MacDevette was the former Chief of the Chemicals and Health Branch of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). She retired in 2022.
Monika Gail MacDevette had worked extensively in applied science and technology innovation in the fields of agriculture, forestry, and coastal and marine development for the past 30 years. She joined the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in 2003. She served as Deputy Director of UNEP-WCMC from 2007, then as Chief of the Regional Capacity Development from 2010 to 2016. In 2016 she was appointed as Deputy Director of the Ecosystems Division, briefly serving as Acting Director in 2018/2019. She then became Chief of the Chemicals and Health Branch in January 2020.
Prior to joining the UNEP, her work experience in Canada and South Africa included academia, policy implementation, multi-stakeholder and private sector partnerships, small, medium and micro-enterprise technology transfer and capacity development. Monika currently leads the organization’s environmental education work promoting the active participation of students in environmental sustainability at university campuses, engaging students and youth as leaders and role models for sustainability through education.
Monika is an environmental physiologist, having received her bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and Ph.D. in Plant Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering.
Monika retired in 2022.
