The purpose of the Foundation shall be, by presentation of the Right Livelihood Award, to promote scientific research, education, public understanding and practical activities which: contribute to a global ecological balance; are aimed at eliminating material and spiritual poverty; contribute to lasting peace and justice in the world.

The Right Livelihood Award was established in 1980 in Sweden to honor and support courageous people solving global problems. It has become widely known as the “Alternative Nobel Prize” and with 178 laureates from 70 countries.

Geneva has been home to the Swiss offices of the Right Livelihood Award Foundation since summer 2015.
