Green Bag Lunch: Local to Global

The Geneva Environment Network Secretariat would hosted a Green Bag Lunch event on 7 December 2016. We had the pleasure of welcoming the author and athlete Claude Marthaler, who introduced his last tour around the world as well as his latest book on women and cycling.

The first part was dedicated to a slide show on the seven years Claude has been cycling around the world, while the second part left time for a discussion with the public.

Background

Claude Marthaler was born in Geneva in 1960, and started his first bike trips as a teenager.

From 1988 to 1991, he cycles to the Himalayas, crossing over India for a year and a half. In 1994, he leaves again for a 7-year trip around the world (122’000 km over 60 countries).

Claude is the co-producer of Bike for Bread (2003), a pilot documentary dedicated to bread delivery men in the Cairo. Today, he wants to produce a whole series of short films on the use of bikes as a working instrument all around the world.

In 2003, François Althabegoity produces La fin du voyage, a 52 minutes documentary on Claude’s trip around the world. It won the Best Film at the Cycling Touring Film Festival 2010 in Begur, Spain.

In 2005, Claude leaves again in the company of Nathalie Pellegrinelli, and together they engage in a 3-years trip during which they cross North Africa, travel around the African Horn, and then shift to India, Nepal, Tibet and central and south-east Asia.

From June to December 2011, Claude zigzags from the Nord Cap to Istanbul, following the East-European border, questioning the reason for its existence and collecting insights into the lives of local populations.

In spring 2013, he roams across Cuba and writes a travel tale.

During the summer of 2015, Claude travels for 3 months in Kirghizstan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan.

Claude collaborates on a regular basis with the Swiss newspapers La liberté, L’écho and Cycle!magazine.

Though the group PRO VELO  in Geneva, Claude programmes et animates the Café des Voyageurs since 2008, a monthly meeting with cyclists who travel around the world and where they share their stories, books and pictures.

In the summers of 2013, 2014 and 2016, Claude was hired by the NGO Helvetas to cycle across the francophone part of Switzerland and project his films in open-air with solar panels (more info on Cinema du Sud).

In 2015, film producer Alexandre Lachavanne runs a 70 minutes documentary called Claude Marthaler, embrasser la terre in Switzerland, Kirghizstan and Tajikistan for the Swiss TV programme Passe-moi les jumelles.
