Briefing session on the IUCN World Parks Congress 2014

Convened by IUCN, International Union for Conservation of Nature and hosted by Australia, the IUCN World Parks Congress 2014 is the premier global event on protected areas taking place in Sydney from 12-19 November. Building on the theme Parks, People, Planet: Inspiring Solutions, the Congress will pave the way for a new era where protected areas are valued and conserved by all parts of society as natural solu-tions to global challenges.
The Congress brings together leaders from governments, UN agencies, non-governmental organizations, businesses, and local and indigenous communities. With an estimated 3,000 delegates, the Congress will strive for new commitments and capacity to advance critical efforts to conserve biodiversity in a world that faces challenges ranging from climate change and water scarcity to energy and food security. Through the outcome document, The Promise of Sydney, messages from the IUCN World Parks Congress 2014 will feed directly into global negotiations on the post-2015 sustainable development agenda, the climate change negotiations, the post-Hyogo Framework of Action on Disaster Risk Reduction, and many other key policy processes in the decade to come.
With less than four months before this once-in-a-decade event, the briefing session will provide an overview of the key issues and expected outcomes of the IUCN World Parks Congress 2014, and solicit support and advice for the important roll-out of The Promise of Sydney.
