Briefing to Missions on Mercury

In 2009, the United Nations Environment Programm (UNEP) Governing Council agreed on the need to develop a global legally binding instrument on mercury and to complete negotiations prior to the 27th session of UNEP Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum, in 2013. The work to prepare this instrument is undertaken by an Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee supported by the Chemicals Branch, Division of Technology, Industry and Economics of UNEP. The fourth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC4) will be held in Punta del Este, Uruguay, from 27 June to 2 July 2012.
The GEN secretariat and UNEP Mercury team organized a briefing on the preparations of INC4. The briefing was held at the International Environment House on Friday 15 June.
After a brief introduction by Tim Kasten, UNEP Chemical Branch Chief, Fernando Lugris, INC Chair, presented in details the opportunies and next steps of the Mercury Negotiations. Jacob Duer gave a short presentation of the meeting logistics in Punta del Este.
After a short question and answers session on the negotiations, Brenda Koekkoek presentend UNEP work on artisanal and small-scale gold mining, preceeded by a short film to be presented in Punta del Este.
