A briefing on the sixth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiation Committee on mercury and the sixth Global Mercury Partnership Advisory Group meeting was organized on 22 October.

Background

The Minamata Convention on Mercury was adopted and opened for signature at the Conference of Plenipotentiaries held from 10 to 11 October 2013 in Kumamoto, Japan. As mandated in the resolution on arrangements in the interim period adopted by the Conference of Plenipotentiaries, the intergovernmental negotiating committee on mercury (INC) established pursuant to Governing Council decision 25/5 will meet during the period between the date on which the Convention is opened for signature and the date of the opening of the first meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention as may be necessary to facilitate the rapid entry into force of the Convention and its effective implementation upon its entry into force.

The sixth session of the intergovernmental negotiating committee on mercury (INC6) is scheduled to take place from 3 to 7 November 2014 at the premises of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in Bangkok, Thailand, with regional consultations on 2 November 2014.

INC6 will be held back to back with the sixth Global Mercury Partnership Advisory Group meeting, scheduled from 31 October 2014 to 1 November 2014 in Bangkok, and a half day orientation session on ‘Principles of Effective Partnership’ scheduled on 30 October 2014.

The UNEP Global Mercury Partnership has 8 partnership areas coordinating the work of more than 131 partners, with the objective of taking immediate actions on mercury and supporting countries effort towards ratification and early implementation of the Convention. At its meeting, the Advisory Group will evaluate Partnership activities, and discuss future activities, including funding and strategies on how to best assist governments in ratifying and implementing the Minamata Convention on Mercury.

You are cordially invited to participate in a briefing organized by the Chemicals Branch of UNEP DTIE that will inform representatives of Permanent Missions as well as other participants on practical arrangements for these meetings, the schedule of work and substantive matters covered during each meeting.
