The Long Shadows: Examples of the environmental impacts of World War II

You are welcome to attend a presentation on the examples of the environmental impacts of World War II, by Simo Laakkonen, a senior researcher in environmental history at the Department of Environmental Science, University of Helsinki. This event will be held at the International Environment I, room 3, on Tuesday 18 March, from 13:00-14:00.

Biography

Simo Laakkonnen is a senior researcher in environmental history at the Department of Environmental Science, University of Helsink. He ihas directed international research projects on the environmental history of urban areas and the Baltic Sea. He has published or edited several books and coedited two special issues on Baltic Sea questions published in Ambio. In 2007 he coedited a book entitled “Ecology of War: Environmental History of Modern Warfare” (in Finnish). He is now coediting a book that will focus on the global environmental history of World War II, which was the largest military conflict in human history. His presentation will address the ambiguous impacts of WW II on wildlife, forests, urban-industrial environments and post-war environmental policy.
