UNEP Mercury and Other Chemical Activities | Briefing to the Permanent Missions

The year 2011 is going to be crucial for the chemicals agenda at the global level.

In February 2009, with a historical decision, the Governing Council of UNEP agreed on the need to develop a global legally binding instrument on mercury. The work to prepare this instrument is being undertaken by an intergovernmental negotiating committee (INC) supported by the Chemicals Branch of the UNEP Division of Technology, Industry and Economics as secretariat. The goal is to complete the negotiations before the twenty-seventh regular session of the Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum in 2013. The second session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to prepare a global legally binding instrument on Mercury (INC2) will be held in Chiba, Japan from 24 to 28 January, 2011.

At GC.SS.XI/GMEF, in 2010, the Governing Council welcomed the establishment of the consultative process on financing options for chemicals and wastes and requested the Executive Director of UNEP to continue leading that process. The third meeting of the process is scheduled to take place in Pretoria, South Africa from 10 to 11 January 2011.
