To deliver at the scale required to achieve sanitation and hygiene leaving no one behind, the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) transformed into the Sanitation and Hygiene Fund (SHF), a dedicated global fund large enough to invest in government‑led programmes for real impact.
Founded in 1990, WSSCC’s work contributed to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6, target 2, with far-reaching impacts on related SDG targets for health, education, women’s empowerment, reducing inequality, improved urban spaces and climate change mitigation.
WSSCC facilitated sector coordination at national, regional and global levels, and engages rights holders and duty bearers to adopt policy guidelines on menstrual hygiene and disability.
At the end of 2020, the WSSCC transformed into SHF, a global financing mechanism to support country-driven programmes to bring sanitation and hygiene to all. It is seeking US$2 billion over the coming five years to provide a 21st-century solution to the decades-old crisis on sanitation, hygiene and menstrual health. Investing in a public-private approach, the fund aims to capitalize on the strengths of its in-country and global partners.
