Film Summary – Protecting the Crossroads
The La Encrucijada Biosphere Reserve, in Mexico, is home to a wide variety of ecosystems and an abundance of wildlife, making it an area of critical conservation importance. It is also home to people, many of whom depend on farming as a livelihood. In 1995, when the park was created, cattle ranching, subsistence farming and small scale production of agricultural crops such as palm oil, were already present. A land use management plan was developed, but due to limited resources, this was not well disseminated or enforced, resulting in encroachment into designated conservation zones. Today, Earthworm Foundation, working with its members Nestlé and Grupo Bimbo, are using satellite technology to gain a detailed understanding of land use in the Reserve. This has provided the basis for multi-stakeholder collaboration involving government bodies, smallholders and other stakeholders, all in order to find a lasting solution that works for people and La Encrucijada.
