Joachim Monkelbaan joined the Quaker United Nations Office (QUNO) in March 2019 as Representative for the Sustainable and Just Economic Systems programme, which seeks to foster economic systems that deliver prosperity for all. He brings 15 years of professional experience with organizations such as the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD), the World Health Organization (WHO), the Institute for Developing Economies (Tokyo, Japan), Climate-KIC (Brussels) and the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs.
Joachim has directed several Sustainability Impact Assessments on trade and investment agreements for the European Commission. He is also the co-founder of the Sustainability Leadership Lab, a training institute focused on raising awareness of complex adaptive systems, group dynamics, and leadership competencies.
Joachim holds a master’s degree in International Law and Economics from the World Trade Institute, Berne, and an LL.M. in European Law and Languages from Maastricht University and the University of Westminster. He also has a Ph.D. in Sustainability Governance from the University of Geneva.
