Madeleine Hamel leads UNU-CPR’s work on science and technology, including environmental technology, examining its effects through a holistic lens encompassing human rights, health and broader societal impacts.
She is part of the research lead team for the UN Scientific Advisory Board (SAB), an independent body that advises UN leaders on breakthroughs in science and technology across areas including biology, artificial intelligence and environmental sciences such as small modular nuclear reactors, carbon dioxide removal, deep-sea mining and geoengineering
Her broader research covers strategic foresight, multilateral governance and emerging global challenges. P Prior to joining UNU-CPR, she served as a Senior Policy Officer at the Swiss National Open Research Data Strategy Council, leading initiatives on research security and data infrastructure, and held research and policy roles at the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs and Fondation pour l’innovation politique.
