This informal briefing organized by OHCHR and UNEP, will discuss efforts under an OHCHR-UNEP MoU to advance the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.

About this Session

This informal briefing will discuss efforts under an OHCHR-UNEP MoU to advance the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment. The session will highlight recent developments related to human rights and the environment within the UN system as well as ongoing efforts related to the promotion and protection of the right to a healthy environment. The session will also include an open discussion on how OHCHR and UNEP can better support member States on the enjoyment of this right with a focus on:

  • Protection of Environmental Human Rights Defenders and civic space;
  • Integrating the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment into UN processes; and
  • Taking rights-based environmental action at the national level.

Discussions are intended to 1) update on UN system efforts to advance the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment and 2) better inform OHCHR and UNEP’s joint strategies and priorities on human rights and the environment.
