Minamata Convention: A Decade of Global Commitment to Make Mercury History | Minamata COP-5 Special Event

As the Minamata Convention on Mercury enters its second decade, experts are buoyed by the progress of recent years. Various activities have been planned to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Convention and its achievements, including this special event featuring diverse voices.
About this Event
The Minamata Convention on Mercury, a global treaty aimed at protecting human health and the environment from the harmful effects of mercury, was adopted ten years ago and signed by over 140 countries at its diplomatic conference in Kumamoto, Japan. Since its inception, the Minamata Convention has made significant strides in addressing the multifaceted challenges posed by mercury pollution, while promoting international cooperation and sustainable practices.
Through an interactive roundtable, this event shared the views of relevant stakeholders who provided insights into the Convention’s progress over ten years, aiming to bring both remembrance and hope, with a focus on the human aspect. It will feature diverse voices, including representatives from Parties, NGOs, financial mechanism, Indigenous Peoples, and artists engaged in environmental causes, inviting them to reflect on what the Convention means to them.
The event also presented the “Make Mercury History” photo exhibition installed at CICG, adding a visual dimension to the commemoration.
