Taking stock of developments in cooperation between the UN and Regional Human Rights Organisations since the workshop held in 2022, this global workshop on regional human rights organisations shared experiences, good practices, and challenges on the role of regional arrangements regarding the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment, and identify concrete steps and activities to advance this right.

About this Workshop

Pursuant to Human Rights Council Resolution 52/14, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) convened a global workshop on regional human rights organisations on 29 and 30 September 2025 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

The objectives of the workshop are:

  1. To take stock of developments in cooperation between the United Nations and Regional Human Rights Organisations since the workshop held in 2022.
  2. To share experiences, good practices, and challenges on the role of regional arrangements regarding the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment, and identify concrete steps and activities to advance this right.
  3. To take stock of international and regional frameworks, mechanisms, developments and initiatives to advance the normative development of this right, and identify areas of cooperation, challenges and good practices.
  4. To exchange good practices and challenges at the national/regional/international levels. Discuss solutions and remedies to address the challenges and risks that individuals and communities face.
  5. To identify innovative and collaborative ways of cooperation among regional human rights mechanisms, United Nations human rights mechanisms, civil society, academia, and national institutions.
