Briefing on the 62nd meeting of the CITES Standing Committee to the Permanent Missions

The 62nd meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) Standing Committee will be held in Geneva, from 23 to 27 July, 2012. The CITES Standing Committee is the subsidiary body of the CITES Conference of the Parties. Its 62nd meeting will be the final substantive preparatory meeting of the Committee before the 16th meeting of the CITES Conference of the Parties (CoP16) to be held in Bangkok from 3-17 March. CoP16 will also coincide with the 40th Anniversary of the adoption of the Convention. Measures to conserve and manage sustainably elephants, rhinoceros, sharks, snakes, big leaf mahogany and other species will be discussed, along with CITES interrelationship with the CBD, FAO, GEF, ICCAT, INTERPOL, UNODC, UNEP, WCO and the World Bank.  The Standing Committee will also address the outcomes of Rio+20, South-South cooperation and major compliance, enforcement, financing and science issues. 

Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office in Geneva were cordially invited to attend a briefing on the main issues and on the relevant items to be discussed at the 62th meeting of the Standing Committee by the Secretary-General. The briefing was held at the International Environment House II, on Thursday 12 July 2012.

The second part of this session, including the projection of the Rhinos’ film, was opened to the public.
