A Chemicals and Waste briefing focusing on preparations for the first meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention on Mercury took place on Tuesday 12 September at the International Environment House II. The event also provided an update on the implementation of the workprogrammes of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions after the recent meetings of the conferences of the Parties in May 2017 and on the intersessional process for SAICM and the sound management of chemicals and waste beyond 2020.

Following the deposit of the 50th instrument of ratification on 18 May 2017, the Minamata Convention on Mercury entered into force on 16 August 2017. You are cordially invited to attend a Chemicals and Waste briefing organized within the framework of the Geneva Environment Network at the International Environment House II, on Tuesday, 12 September in preparation of the First Meeting of the Conference of Parties to the Minamata Convention (COP1).

Minamata COP1 will take place in Geneva, from Sunday, 24 September to Friday, 29 September. The Minamata High Level Segment, hosted by the President of the Swiss Confederation convenes from Thursday, 28 September to Friday, 29 September to Make Mercury History. The Minamata COP1 will be preceded by regional and other preparatory meetings on Saturday, 23 September and the morning of Sunday, 24 September. In addition, alongside Minamata COP1 a number of mercury-related activities and events will form part of Mercury Week that begins on Friday, 22 September at the World Health Organisation.
