Global call for plans that consider the health impacts of extreme heat

In an effort to better understand evolving governance around heat and health, the Global Heat Health Information Network, in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) and HIGH Horizons Project, is calling for submissions of Heat Health Action Plans, National Health Adaptation Plans and related governance documents containing heat health components from around the world.

The collected plans will inform policy analyses of global and thematic coverage and content of existing plans: where they are, who they protect, and how. This initiative will also help the Network update their global inventory of heat health policy efforts.

All active plans that consider the health impacts of extreme heat can be submitted to this review. Plans can be submitted in any language, and plans that are not publicly available can be submitted for research purposes only.

The submission deadline for inclusion in the review is 30 April 2024, however the Network always accepts submissions of Heat Health Action Plans for their online library and their global inventory of national and sub-national plans.

2024 Champions of the Earth Award | Land restoration, drought resilience, combating desertification

UNEP’s annual Champions of the Earth award – the UN’s highest environmental honour, which recognizes outstanding leaders from government, civil society, and the private sector for their transformative impact on the environment.

This year, UNEP encourages nominations of individuals and organizations developing and implementing sustainable policies and solutions to restore land, enhance drought resilience, and combat desertification.

Individuals, organizations and government entities may be nominated under the categories of Policy Leadership, Inspiration and Action, Entrepreneurial Vision, and Science and Innovation. Nominations are open from 15 April to 5 May 2024 to everyone. The Champions of the Earth will be announced in late 2024.

AI Futures | A cinematic exploration of everyday life driven by AI

AI for Good and Our Future Life™ invites storytellers to submit a storyboard with their envisioned life moments and the integration of AI within them. Share a moment of future life you see yourself in. Tell a story about something you care about – the environment, justice, immigration, science, the future of commerce and democracy, healing, human connection, discovery and exploration. How does this future unite us? What world would you imagine being a part of and how does your idea let us see a glimpse of that world?

The finalists will be invited to create a 2-4 minute short film for a chance to be presented during the Summit of the Future in September 2024 where the winner will be selected.

The deadline for story/storyboard submissions is 20 May 2024.

Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES)

Call for inputs to strengthen the implementation of objective 3(a) on knowledge generation catalysis

In decision IPBES-10/1, the IPBES Plenar approved a workplan on knowledge generation catalysis for the intersessional period 2023-2024, which the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel and the Bureau are implementing within the scope of their respective mandates supported by the secretariat.

Inputs and suggestions will be taken into account in the development of the draft workplans for the intersessional periods 2024-2025 and 2025-2026, for the implementation of the knowledge generation catalysis element of objective 3 (a), which the Plenary will consider at its eleventh session.

Inputs and suggestions should be sent using the submission form available HERE, by 5 May 2024.

Call for Contributions to support uptake of the IPBES Invasive Alien Species Assessment

The IPBES Assessment of Invasive Alien Species and Their Control (Invasive Alien Species Assessment), approved by the Plenary at IPBES10 in Bonn, Germany, outlines options for decision-makers to design appropriate responses. It has received wide media-coverage and is off to a very promising start.

Building on this momentum and to catalyze further supportive efforts,Governments, orgazisations and individuals are invited to support the uptake and use of the key findings of the Invasive Alien Species Assessment. Examples of concrete contributions to support uptake and use of the Invasive Alien Species Assessment include the organization of in-person or online events, or the development of learning and other materials that support increased understanding of the key findings of the Assessment.

Members are also encouraged to continued undertaking different capacity-building efforts in support of IPBES and invited you to submit and share such activities or developed resources aimed at building capacities relevant to IPBES. Contributions can be registered through the following link. All activities submitted by 30 June 2024 will be reported to the IPBES Plenary at its 11th session (December 2024).

WTO Public Forum 2024

The 2024 Public Forum will explore how re-globalization can make trade more inclusive, ensuring that the benefits of trade reach more people. It will also examine the role of digitalization, services and sustainability in achieving this goal.

Participants interested in organizing working sessions at the Public Forum can find details about the application process in this information note. An online application form can be accessed from the information note. This should be completed no later than 14 June 2024 (23:59 CET). All sessions at the Forum are organized by participants.

Individuals interested in attending the Forum should complete the online registration form no later than 23 August 2024 (23:59 CET).

Mapping Loss and Damage Activities in 2024

The Loss and Damage Collaboration (L&DC) is a group of climate policy and art and cultural practitioners, researchers, scientists and engineers, activists, lawyers, advocates and decision-makers from both the global North and South working together to ensure that vulnerable developing countries, and the vulnerable people, communities, ecosystems and species within them, have the support they need to address climate change-related loss and damage.

To achieve its ultimate objective, it strives to enhance its collaboration with other Loss and Damage stakeholders and identify and address any gaps in addressing loss and damage. The goal of this mapping work is to avoid duplication and build upon each other’s efforts, while also discovering ways to collaborate more efficiently with other Loss and Damage actors.

State of the Climate 2023: User Survey

This survey is intended for users of WMO’s State of the Climate reports as the team looks to improve and renovate the products. It consists of three sections and should take 5-10 minutes to complete.
