During the COVID-19 pandemic, some live events organized by organizations around the world, contributing to the global environmental agenda, have also been included. Stay tuned and follow us also on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, or visit our website regularly for additional updates.
Due to the developments in the sanitary situation, most institutions in Geneva continue operating virtually. Our update on COVID-19 and the environment lists relevant information, research, data, and press releases on the environmental origins and impacts of the pandemic.
Exploring Nature-based Solutions
The Geneva Nature-based Solutions Dialogues are kicking off on Monday 26 April with a session focusing on health, as the world is still coping with the challenges of addressing the origins and consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. This Nature-based Solutions journey will bring together multiple actors from International Geneva and abroad, to establish a common understanding, set an open dialogue and share perspectives, in the lead-up to a critical year for nature and society.
Leading experts invited to talk at this session will discuss the increasing recognition of the interdependency of human, animal and environmental health, a robust foundation to raise ambition and take action to improve ecosystem and society health, in the lead up to the forthcoming international negotiations on biodiversity and climate change. Register on webex and join at 15.00 CEST.
The next episode of Wednesday for the Planet on 28 April, will present a reportage by CNBC International TV looking at how Nature-based Solutions can help various industries become more sustainable and in mitigating environmental issues, followed by presentations by experts.
Climate: 2021, “the Year for Action”
Updates from last week on the state of climate and steps taken by world leaders to put the planet on a green path:
- United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and World Meteorological Organization Secretary-General Prof. Petteri Taalas jointly launched the final WMO State of the Global Climate in 2020 report. The report sounds the alarm, as 2020 was another unprecedented year of extreme weather and climate disasters with a global average temperature reaching 1.2°C above pre-industrial level.
- EU negotiators reached an agreement on the European Climate Law that will enshrine the EU’s commitment to reaching climate neutrality by 2050. EU States thereby agreed to cut emissions 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. Read more.
- At the Leaders Summit on Climate convened on Earth Day by President Biden, government leaders from 40 nations representing 80% of global emissions voiced their commitment to more ambitious policy measures and stressed the need for both mitigation and adaptation.
- The UN Chief welcomed the commitments made during the summit and called on the international community to make this “a decade of transformation,” starting by building a global coalition for net-zero emissions by mid-century to reach the goals of the Paris Agreement.
- The UNEP Finance Initiative launched the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ), joining efforts with major players in the banking and insurance sector to align investment portfolios with net-zero emissions by 2050. UNEP FI brought together 43 of the world’s leading banks to form the UN-convened Net-Zero Banking Alliance. The new banking initiative becomes a founding member of the GFANZ alongside the pioneering UN-convened Net-Zero Asset Owner Alliance.
As reminded by the Secretary-General, the next step in the right direction is for all countries to submit new and more ambitious climate action plans – Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) – under the Paris Agreement.
