Background

WaterLex is an international public interest development organisation based in Geneva, Switzerland. It is a UN-Water Partner with UN ECOSOC special consultative status.
Its mission is to develop sustainable solutions based on human rights standards to improve water and sanitation governance worldwide, particularly regarding consistent water law and policy frameworks. It works with an alliance of interested parties to improve water-governance frameworks, bringing them in line with country obligations under international human rights law. The organisation has a secretariat in Geneva, a supervisory board of directors, and a large pool of members and expert advisors.

The International Secretariat is responsible for the implementation of WaterLex projects and the involvement of members and volunteers in the organisation. It also acts as the organisation’s focal point for external stakeholders.

Job Purpose

The Legal Officer role is to support implementation and administration of WaterLex programmes supporting the Human Rights to Water and Sanitation.

Responsibilities

The Legal Officer reports directly to the Senior Legal Advisor.

The Legal Officer is primarily responsible for the following:
- Legal research, analysis and report preparation
- Management of legal database
- Supervision of volunteers that research information for the legal database
- Administrative activities associated with the management and monitoring of the online NHRI Platform
- Development of funding proposals under the supervision of the Development or Programme Manager
- Development of training materials, and facilitation of capacity enhancement workshops with stakeholders/actors working in water governance, service supply, development, and human rights

Qualifications

Education
University Law Degree, with specialisation in human rights law. Water and/or environmental law is an additional asset.

Professional Experience
More than one year of experience in water governance and human rights related to economic, social and cultural rights is an asset.

Languages
Fluency in spoken and written English and French is a requirement. Knowledge of additional languages especially Spanish is considered an advantage.

Other details

This position is 100%, based in Geneva, and will require some international travel.
The candidate needs to have the legal right to work in Switzerland, and state eligibility (residence/work permit, EU citizenship) on the application.
